PANOS

Palcos novos, palavras novas

PANOS is a project of the D. Maria II National Theatre that promotes and values youth theater in Portugal and the new dramaturgies. A project where one reads, makes and presents theater from and for young people from 12 to 19 years old.

In each edition, D. Maria II commissions three original pieces from some of the most exciting contemporary writers.  Youth theater groups across the country are then encouraged to choose and stage one of these texts, presenting it in their city, town or village. Throughout the process, participants have the possibility to study and discuss the text with its author, in a two-day workshop and then in an interim meeting.

After the premiere in their localities, six of the shows are selected by a jury for presentation at the PANOS Festival – an annual gathering of hundreds of young people from all over the country, who thus have the opportunity to watch the different creations, in a collective and intense celebration of the theatrical experience.

The theatrical texts, written within the scope of PANOS, are annually edited by D. Maria II, which in this way contributes to the promotion of contemporary writing and the diffusion of new dramaturgies.

With PANOS, D. Maria II also reinforces its mission of decentralizing theatrical creation, promoting theatrical practices among young audiences throughout the country.
